pure absence - artist notes In a virtual world, what is absence? To be present in the virtual world, is this to be absent from the physical world? Or the opposite - is only my avatar me? What of the things I build? Am I ever absent from the virtual world? Madness, sickness and death - do they have a home in the virtual world? Or are they to be elided, glossed over, like ugliness is in the uniform absurdly good-look of avatars in Second Life? Madness, sickness and death, these define absence, and therefore life. Physical laws describe only presence, are simple to recreate, and define only lifelessness. Those familiar with the roaring, screaming hiss that inevitably precedes waking with a migraine will perhaps recognise an antidote within the screaming, soothing loudness of the pure tones relentlessly pursuing the deep outrageous pink forms over and through the transparent floors. These tones march mathematically, unforgivingly through iterations of symmetrical whole number patterns of hertz: 11, 22, 33, 44, 55, 66, 77, 88, 99, 111, 222, 333, 444, 555, 666, 777, 888, 999, 11111. Madness, sickness and death made me make those tones, and I'm glad they did, but I wish they hadn't.
