CHROMACY
______________________________
a cycle of 3d sound + colour sculptures by Adam Nash

Artist's Statement

Chromacy is an exploration of 3d space on its own terms.

It uses 3d space as a performative medium in visual, aural and philosophical terms. Rather than treating 3d space as an analogy for physical space, Chromacy attempts to explore the native, formal properties of 3d space itself.

Whilst each piece within the cycle is constructed according to individual patterns, rules and structures, there is an overall approach to sound and colour decisions acknowledging the formal experiments of the early 20th Century constructivist composers (particularly Webern and Berg's serialism) and visual artists (particularly Moholy-Nagy, Kandinsky and Klee). These artists serve as useful reference points for exploring a medium that has "photorealism" and "narrative" as its immediate antecedents, which is probably truer of digital 3d than any other medium.

The pieces that make up the cycle are a self-contained, thematically and stucturally interlinking, episode in an ongoing process of exploring and prototyping abstract, non-'realistic' avatars for use in live multi-user 3d performance worlds. However, this cycle is presented for enjoyment as a single-user colour and sound experience. As such, the user may choose to be automatically guided through each piece (much as a user might play a CD or watch a movie), or to use keyboard or mouse navigation to interact with the pieces in a deeper, more experimental and experiential manner.
